Most male dogs produce normal secretions from the tip of the prepuce and sexually mature dogs can even produce a slightly thicker discharge which can be visible within the coat in this area. Occasionally this discharge can be related to an underlying clinical condition called balanoposthitis. Balanoposthitis is an inflammatory and painful condition which affects the mucosa (lining) of the penis or prepuce (the sheath of skin that houses the penis). 

Causes of Balanoposthitis

- Trauma to the penis e.g. foreign bodies, insect bites or stings.Severe urinary tract infections.

- Urolithiasis (stones or crystals within the urinary tract).

- Phimosis (the inability of the penis to protrude out of the prepuce).

- Paraphimosis (the inability of the penis to retract into the prepuce).

- Localised overgrowth of bacteria at the site.

- Cancers of the prepuce or penis.

- Sexually transmitted disease.

Home care advice

- If you feel comfortable, carefully clip away long hair from the tip of the prepuce to allow air to reach his skin.

- Gently clean the area a few times per day with a mild and dilute antiseptic solution e.g. Povidone Iodine, 0.05% solution of Chlorhexidine or a sterile saline solution.

- Have your pet wear an Elizabethan-Collar to prevent him licking at the site of discharge or inflamed tissue.

If you are concerned and suspect that your dog may have an unusual discharge visible at the region of his prepuce it is advised that you schedule an appointment at your local veterinary clinic during normal clinic opening hours to have him examined by your vet.
