Chronic diarrhoea in dogs
Chronic Diarrhoea is diarrhoea that has persisted for weeks rather than a few days.
As we discussed, I am concerned about the duration of diarrhoea in your dog as well as the lack of improvement. Chronic diarrhoea can lead to malnourishment and other serious problems. Chronic diarrhoea may also indicate some underlying disease process.
These cases therefore always warrant a full clinical examination and investigation of your dog diet habits and possibly further tests on blood and faecal samples.
I therefore recommend that you arrange for an appointment with your normal veterinary clinic during normal opening hours.
It can often be a good idea to take faeces samples with you for the vet to examine. This is often best done by collecting a small amount daily over 3-5 days if possible. These small samples can be collected in one container. In some cases, your veterinary surgeon may ask you to provide further samples. Check with your vet which samples they may like you to provide.
