Insect sting or bite

Updated

If you suspect that your pet is showing signs of swelling to the face or breathing difficulty or your pet has been stung multiple times you should contact your vet or their out of hours veterinary care provider immediately to arrange an urgent appointment.

Background

As the weather improves it is quite common to see bees, bumblebees, wasps, hornets and ants. These creatures do not usually sting or bite unless provoked to do so. It is important to note that both curious and unsuspecting pets are at risk when they come across these insects. Pets love to walk, sniff and play near hedgerows and in the undergrowth. They love to pounce and catch flying insects. This activity will increase their chance of being stung or bitten. Bees stingers can continue to release venom for some time after the pet has been stung. Ants produce formic acid which is injected into the pet’s skin via a bite.

Symptoms of insect stings or bites:

- Sudden lameness - holding a paw up

- Suddenly licking at an area of skin

- Sudden swelling of the lip, eyelid(s), ear(s) and face

- Skin rash or bumps on the skin

- Raised areas of fur on the body or limbs

- Itching

- Drooling

- Vomiting

- Diarrhoea

- Breathing difficulties

- Collapse

Decontamination

- Check the affected area for signs of a bee stinger and remove it if possible with a piece of card or plastic to prevent further toxin injection by brushing out the sting.

- It is not essential to remove wasp stings from the skin.

- Bathe the reddened area in cool clean water.

- Apply a cold compress to the affected area for 15 minutes to help reduce inflammation and discomfort.

- Keep your pet calm and relaxed.

- Monitor symptoms closely.

- Contact your veterinarian or their out of hours veterinary care provider immediately if you notice swelling to the face or your pet is having breathing difficulties.

Prevention:

- Avoid exercising your pet in areas where there would be a greater chance of coming into contact with bees, bumblebees, wasps, hornets, ants or spiders.

- If a swarm of bees arrives in your garden please keep your pet indoors, close the windows and contact your local beekeeper.

- Discourage your pet from playing with insects

- Avoid exercising your pet near hedgerows and flowers if they have had a severe allergic reaction to insect bites or stings previously.

- Train your pet not to pounce and catch flying insects if possible.
