Lameness in dogs can have various causes and therefore a physical examination is usually needed to make a correct assessment of the case.

Some common causes of severe acute lameness in grown dogs are: 

- Trauma (including fractures dislocations and sprains) 

- Aggravated arthritis  

- Infections of the foot or elsewhere (with infections the lameness is often getting worse)

- Pad or claw damage 

As we discussed, your dog has a severe lameness and I therefore recommend that your dog is examined by your veterinary surgeon as soon as possible.

Keep the dog rested until examined by a vet, i.e. rest the dog on a lead and do not let it play with other dogs or run loose. Any jumping should be also be avoided.
